Designing with purpose for real results
Design principles have become a cliche everyone wanna avoid. 😬
Yes. They seem trivial.
The guidelines that damn near every writes about.
But, admit to yourself — do you follow them? or have you ever tried to follow them?
I bet you do not.
Why?
Because, again — they seem trivial.
Our phycology makes us neglect all known facts, rules, and methods.
That’s where we often fail. Fail when ignoring simple but working rules.
Another widespread misconception: rules limit the flight of fancy.
Dears, when we do not follow the rules, we design bull-shit, and our flight of fancy is not worth a penny.
Okay. Then, how to design with purpose? — you’d ask.
Follow the trivial rules. — I’d tell you. 😉
Follow a Content-First Design Process.
You have to know the content and its purpose before you start designing.
Create a priority hierarchy.
Prioritize the content to place the visual emphasis appropriately.
Do not simply color the wireframes.
Throw away the wireframes-based mindset and develop new UX solutions when adding aesthetics.
Follow a data-driven approach.
Base your decisions on insights. Dig deep into the brand essence and reflect it in your design.
Create points of tension.
Be creative and make a weird design solution that goes astray to catch attention.
Question every design solution you make.
Ask yourself why you’ve made a specific solution and whether it will achieve the project goals.
